Integrating Traditional And Innovative Technological Methods In Knife Craftsmanship

Abstract

This article examines the traditional knife craftsmanship of Uzbekistan, particularly the Chust knife-making school of the Fergana Valley, and explores possibilities for integrating its traditional methods with modern technological approaches. The study considers the traditional master–apprentice system, metal selection and processing, forging, shaping, heat treatment, tempering, sharpening, polishing, handle production, and decorative finishing. The paper proposes several directions for introducing modern technologies into knife craftsmanship, including digital design, laboratory analysis of materials, precise temperature control, modern sharpening and polishing technologies, digital documentation, and quality control. The central idea is not to replace traditional technologies completely with modern ones, but to combine their respective strengths. Such an approach can preserve the authenticity of national craftsmanship while improving product quality, consistency, safety, market competitiveness, and prospects for international recognition.
